Functional Medicine Health Coaching is a collaboration between the coach and client to address health concerns as seen through a Functional Medicine lens. Functional Medicine looks at the body as a whole unit. Every system is interconnected and therefore influenced and affected by each other. For example, poor digestion could affect the body's ability to make vital nutrients available to cells which could in turn hamper metabolism making you feel lethargic. My training as a Functional Medicine Health Coach gives me the tools and know-how to dive deep beneath the surface to figure out the root cause of your symptoms. Because without addressing the root cause, you are just applying band aids and inviting more "dis-ease". The body has incredible power to heal itself, we just have to support it and then get out of it's way!
My Story
After a lifetime of migraine headaches I decided there had to be a better way to live. My best friend taught yoga and was always inviting me to come. Attending that class was the first step on my journey of moving toward the healthiest version of myself.
Three years later, my relationship with food completely changed. I learned from a functional medical doctor that my “healthy” breakfast of yogurt, granola and berries was spiking my blood sugar and forcing me to eat foods that maintained that level to avoid a crash (hence my 10:30am daily Dr. Pepper). I followed their elimination diet and discovered that my headaches were far less frequent and I slept better than I ever had.
Since then, I have tried several different ways of eating (Paleo, vegetarian and macrobiotic to name a few). Like it does for everyone, life got busy and I made more and more choices that took me away from a life filled with energy and clarity.
Once the nest was empty, my desire for a healthy life led me to become certified by the Institute of Integrative Nutrition as a health coach. But the science geek in me felt like there was more information to learn about the biochemistry of the body. It wasn't until enrolling in The School of Applied Functional Medicine that it all fell into place. SAFM taught me about root causes, the interconnectedness of our body's systems and that our biochemistry is uniquely individual. Today I have such a different perspective on how to achieve optimal health, maintain it and thrive from the benefits.
